Combinatorial conditions that imply word-hyperbolicity for 3-manifolds

Thurston conjectured that a closed triangulated 3-manifold in which every edge has degree 5 or 6, and no two edges of degree 5 lie in a common 2-cell, has word-hyperbolic fundamental group. We establish Thurston's conjecture by proving that such a manifold admits a piecewise Euclidean metric of non-positive curvature and the universal cover contains no isometrically embedded flat planes. The proof involves a mixture of computer computation and techniques from small cancellation theory.Comment: (21 pages) To appear in Topolog

Broad Programmatic, Policy and Planning Assessments under the National Environmental Policy Act and Similar Devices: A Quiet Revolution in an Approach to Environmental Considerations

This article examines the legal background of broad-based environmental assessments and court decisions interpreting the scope, timing and other issues regarding these assessments. The author then explores the use of these broad-based assessments in both the U.S. government and international institutions

Rotations, Risk and Reward: Farming system choice on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia

    Get PDF
A farming systems and rotations trial was conducted at Minnipa on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia between 1995 and 2001. The results have been presented to local farmers as simple gross margin comparisons (with a relatively low value for the pasture phase if present) in extension publications. The results are reassessed in terms of increased livestock return, and allowing for permanent/family labour and machinery overheads. The relative risk vs return is also considered to explain the acceptance of the research by local farmers.Farm Management, Land Economics/Use,

Developing ‘know how’: a participatory approach to assessment of placement learning

    Get PDF
This paper is based on research undertaken on the supervised practice of an undergraduate programme of study which leads to both BA (Hons) degree and a professional qualification in youth work in a university in England. Youth work, for those unfamiliar with it, is a form of informal and experiential educational practice with young people often located in community settings. The purpose of youth work is to help young people learn about themselves, others and society through the use of educational activities which combine enjoyment, challenge and learning. Importantly, however, the findings of this paper we would argue are directly transferable to a variety of practice-based educational and vocational settings where students need to reflect on, analyse and either assess their own practice or have their practice assessed by others

Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol County: Increasing Program Awareness for the Help at Home Program

We came up with the idea of using a cost analysis to clearly demonstrate the advantage of home care vs. hospitalization. John Hopkins Bay view Medical Center conducted a study within their geriatrics unit to test their Hospital At Home program against typical on-site care at the hospital. The study was held over the course of 30 days involving hundreds of patients across three cities and the results were staggering. Not only was at home care 32% cheaper (5,081versus5,081 versus 7,480) but also overall customer satisfaction was significantly higher
